Muir Housing has appointed two contractors to carry out Groundwork services at all of their properties. The contract valued at £1,011,195.00 per annum has been awarded to Renewable Power Systems Ltd and it is anticipated that the treatment facility will commence operation in January 2011. |

Norfolk County Council Residual Waste Disposal Contracts - PIN Notice
In approximately May 2010 Norfolk County Council will seek expressions of interest to provide residual waste disposal services, including the possible recycling and / or treatment of the residual waste and in particular the biodegradable fraction of such waste.
The contract period is intended to be from 1st April 2011 to 31st March 2015 with the option to extend for 1 year.
The total service requirement is estimated to be approximately 165 000 tonnes per annum in the early years of the contracts but could rise up to approximately 225 000 tonnes per annum by the end of the contract period. |

Verdant and Connaught join forces in Norwich - Contract Award
On 1st April 2010 Verdant begun running waste and recycling collections for Norwich city council, under a £20 million, 7 year deal outsourced by the local authority's new integrated services contractor, Connaught. Verdant will handle all recycling and waste collections for the city's 63,000 households as part of an arrangement which represents the first time either Verdant or Connaught have entered into this kind of strategic partnership. |

Thurrock Council Commingled Food & Garden Waste Treatment - Contract Award
Thurrock Council has awarded Verdant its first ever local authority organics treatment deal. Verdant have been awarded the £7 million, seven-year contract to treat commingled food and garden waste collected by Thurrock council, in Essex. The contract will involve dealing with an estimated 8,000 tonnes of commingled food and garden waste collected at the kerbside by the council every year.

World's largest waste gasification plant at Bradford?
Bradford MBC has awarded planning permission to Lancashire-based BioGen Power to develop what the company claims will be the "world's largest" facility to use gasification technology to recover energy from residual waste. Building work on the project is expected to involve a capital investment of around £100 million, and is scheduled to begin in late 2011 and be completed in late 2013. The facility is anticipated to have a 160,000 tonne-a-year capacity. |

Landfill Tax rises to £48 per tonne
Landfill Tax rose to £48 per tonne from April 1st 2010 as the government continues to push to reduce waste and divert more material from landfill towards recycling and composting. The lower rate for inert material - such as incinerator bottom ash - remains frozen at £2.50 per tonne up to 2011/12.
